As part of our D and AD Brief, we were directed by the energy supplier E.ON to “engage generation ‘Y’ in a relationship with E.ON that champions new ways to use energy in the home and empowers them to enlist others in an energy revolution.” Having only 5 weeks to work on research and to actually produce boards to present our final idea, it feels like we really have to make some progress.
All last week was spent thinking up one hundred ideas to draw up on to an A0 sheet of paper, which on Monday, I narrowed down to five and then after a discussion with my lecturer, narrowed it down to two. So, I’m at this point where I don’t know which direction I’m going to go. I have these two every different ideas; one that I think is more realistic and might be more positive in relation to my values as a designer and another idea that’s more fun/out there, that almost feels like someone else’s idea.
Here we go, I need to get some experience explaining my ideas…
The first one is more about bringing the community together. It uses the kinetic energy that is normally waste when we use our bikes. My idea is to have dynamo device on bikes the charge a battery and when you finish using the bike for what ever it was that you were using it for (say, getting to university and back), you’d be able to take this raw energy created and bring it into the home to create light or heat. A flaw in this idea is that dynamos only create small amounts of electricity therefore, the idea has been developed into something that will bring the community together. It will linked to social networking and encourage people to come together and share their energy, that they themselves have created and use it in an activity, a cinema, an event of something.
The second idea is more about making people aware of what appliances they use in their homes. It gives people an understanding what’s using up energy. It’s a really simple and hopefully effective design. It’s basically a display showing a number, this number will represent the things that are plugged into the main and that are using the electricity. Without having to compromise on the style and the feel of it, I want it to be made cheaply and work effectively, the idea behind that is that it would be something that E.ON would be able to sent out to all the people they supply to. I hope to incorporate a community element into it or a social interaction aspect.
Those are my ideas that I’m hoping to develop a little more and then eventually make. I’m planning on keeping my blog updated with the D and AD competition, I feel as though I am benefiting from having done so.
